Consult an Attorney Before Turning Yourself In
If you have an outstanding warrant and you’re wondering whether or not you should turn yourself in, well first, you should talk with an attorney. I’m Tahlequah criminal defense attorney Aaron Grubb at Wirth Law Office. In this video, we’re gonna talk about whether or not you should really turn yourself in.
So, first off, turning yourself in can be a show of good faith to show that you don’t have to come and catch me, you don’t have to send people to arrest me. I’m coming in of my own free will, and I’m trying to get my case resolved as efficiently as possible.
The Risks Involved with Self-Surrender
This is important because the state doesn’t have to spend resources sending officers out looking for you and bringing you back in to process you, and so that can be a show of good faith. However, a lot of the time, especially in busy counties such as Tulsa, that can actually come back to bite you.
Recently, we had a case in which there was an outstanding warrant in two separate counties. The client went to go turn themselves in one county, and then the staff there, the jail clerk, looked up and saw, “Oh, you have an outstanding warrant in this other county.”
Navigating the Process Effectively
Well, we have to, even though you’re ready to pay bond for your county one offense, well, we have to now keep you a whole week until this other matter gets resolved. And so, that can kind of cause some jams in the system.
If they had retained an attorney before submitting themselves to the jail, then after a quick search on Oklahoma State Courts Network (OSCN), that would have been found out. We could have navigated a better solution or better strategy to actually turn oneself in, and make sure a bond is paid and fees are covered before actually taking that step.
