Strategic Communication: What Not to Disclose
Do you have a consultation set up with our firm, and now you’re not sure of how you should conduct yourself, or you don’t know what you should say? Hi, I’m Tahlequah criminal attorney Aaron Grubb at Wirth Law Office, and in this video, we’re just going to talk about what you shouldn’t tell us in an initial consultation.
Clients often feel the need to share every detail of their situation when they meet with an attorney. While providing relevant information is important, it’s crucial to remember that in our legal system, the burden is on the state to prove guilt, not on you to prove innocence.
Be Mindful of the Details You Share
For example, if a crime occurred at 2 a.m. at a Pizza Hut and you voluntarily tell your attorney that you were there at 1:59 a.m., that statement now limits potential defense strategies. Your attorney cannot later challenge your whereabouts at that time because you’ve already confirmed it.
This is why it’s essential to let the state build its case rather than inadvertently helping them do it. Your attorney’s job is to protect your rights, and that starts with careful, strategic communication.
